Science gets Ratt-Zinged

Slow learners. The Catholic Church is getting ready to trash evolution in the church's education institutions (read: Catholic schools).

So much for those superior Jesuit school educations. Or, your tax vouchers hard at work.

Letter to the Terrorists

Avedon posted this one, and I couldn't agree more:
I don't know who wrote this Letter to the terrorists, but a lot of us feel the same way:
Because if this is a message to Tony Blair, we've got news for you. We don't much like our government ourselves, or what they do in our name. But, listen very clearly. We'll deal with that ourselves. We're London, and we've got our own way of doing things, and it doesn't involve tossing bombs around where innocent people are going about their lives. And that's because we're better than you.

I'm not a journalist, either

Markos holds the hand of an on-line journalist and explains to him one more time, very slowly.

If you blog (or even if you don't), go read it.

Judy gwine do some time

AP via Yahoo:
WASHINGTON - New York Times reporter Judith Miller was jailed Wednesday for refusing to divulge a confidential source to a grand jury investigating the Bush administration's leak of an undercover CIA operative's name. Another reporter, Matthew Cooper of Time magazine, agreed to talk and avoided jail.

Cooper agreed to cooperate with prosecutors after disclosing that his source had given him permission to do so hours earlier. The about-face came after nearly two years of refusals to disclose the information.

The developments added further intrigue to what already was one of the most closely watched press freedom cases in recent history.

"I do not view myself as above the law," Miller told U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan. "You are right to send me to prison."
I'm sure she'll get a great book deal for describing her heroic sojourn in jail.

Rove: Perjury or Treason

Maha Barbara O'Brian, writing at The American Street, quotes James Moore of The Huffington Post speculating that Karl Rove may be positioning himself to face perjury charges in order to duck the much more serious charge of treason:
Positioning is Rove's favorite political sport and that's the purpose of this admission. It's a metaphorical "so what" shrug of the shoulders. But the sub text of Rove's words shows another strategy. The presidential advisor undoubtedly knows he is guilty of a federal crime but, for obvious political reasons, he needs it to be something less than treason. Perjury will be his default position. The political harm to be done to his president and his party for a conviction of treason is incalcuable.
It's a grand old White House tradition, going back to the dozens of indictments during Saint Ronnie's corrupt regime. People like Ollie North acted as if there was something noble in breaking the law if it was done to further the agenda of Dear Leader. Rove is likely to do the same.

As Hunter Thompson was fond of saying back in the day, "The scum also rises."

Maintain the Illusion

Kevin Drum quotes a NYT piece that captures Republican Senate aids essentially telling the leaders of the religious wrong to not show their true colors (those would be white and mighty white, by the way):
In a series of conference calls on Tuesday and over the last several days, Republican Senate aides encouraged conservative groups to avoid emphasizing the searing cultural issues that social conservatives see at the heart of the court fight, subjects like abortion, public support for religion and same-sex marriage, participants said.
Perfect. What are they going to pretend that they really care about, then? The Sermon on the Mount? Love thy neighbor?

If you take away the "searing cultural issues that social conservatives see at the heart of the court fight, subjects like abortion, public support for religion and same-sex marriage," the radical clerics of the American Taliban don't really have much they can talk about, do they?

Plame prosecutor smells blood

Armando thinks Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerals smells blood. The only question is whose blood.

He links to this piece in the NYT:
Matthew Cooper of Time magazine and Judith Miller of The New York Times should be jailed for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury investigating the disclosure of the identity of a covert C.I.A. operative, the special prosecutor in the case said in court papers filed today.

Last week, Time magazine provided Mr. Cooper's notes and other documents to the special prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, after the United States Supreme Court refused to hear appeals filed by the magazine and the two reporters. In today's filing, Mr. Fitzgerald said he had reviewed the documents and determined that Mr. Cooper's testimony "remains necessary."

The reporters, who have consistently refused to testify about conversations with their sources, filed papers on Friday suggesting that they be sentenced to home confinement if incarceration is required. In the alternative, Ms. Miller asked to be sent to a federal prison camp in Danbury, Conn., and Mr. Cooper to one in Cumberland, Md.

Mr. Fitzgerald opposed those requests today, saying that the local jail in the District of Columbia "or some other nearby federal facility" would be more appropriate.
Armando is right. Fitzgerald is pushing this too hard to not be on to something juicy. I smell a fat piggy in the White House.

American Taliban

I've taken to using the term "American Taliban" for the religious right lately. Markos spells out why.

Winger Re-Write of History

Digby has a good follow-up on the efforts of wingers like radical cleric Lou Sheldon to force the National Park Service to alter the video of the Lincoln Memorial to make it more winger-friendly (See Lincoln Memorial video too liberal below).

Apparently the wingers want the video to include some wingnut marches in D.C. that were not held at the Lincoln Memorial. Good work on this from The Carpetbagger Report.
