Science Saturday

Time to get a handle on evolution. With so much over-ripe BS coming out of the radical wrong these days (not to mention the "Fact-Free Administration), I took a stroll down memory lane complements of Lindsay Beyerstein this afternoon.

Take a walk on the wild side and get in touch with your ancestors. It's the best quick and dirty view of human evolution I've seen.

The Rice Card

It's early on Saturday morning. I'm at a coffee shop in Santa Cruz. My mind and body are still dealing with the drugs that are trying to kick this nasty respiratory virus out of my body.

And I hate to admit it, but I can't tell at this early hour if this Draft Condi in 2008 is high-concept satire or the real deal.

If it is for real, I'm going to dig out my Rice on Leadership piece from last year and publish it again. Party on!

Why Does Larry Johnson Hate America?

The former career CIA agent has words you should read:
I voted for George Bush in November of 2000 because I was promised a President who would bring a new tone and a new ethical standard to Washington.

So where are we? The President has flip-flopped on his promise to fire anyone at the White House implicated in a leak. We now know from press reports that at least Karl Rove and "Scooter" Libby are implicated in these leaks and may have lied during the investigation.

Instead of a President concerned first and foremost with protecting this country and the intelligence officers who serve it, we are confronted with a President who is willing to sit by while political operatives savage the reputations of good Americans like Valerie and Joe Wilson.
Okay, looks like we definitely got those new ethical standards.

Clark takes 2nd Kos Straw Poll

Personally I like Clark as a candidate. He has the chops to actually win.

However, there are some Greenies who are willing to keep the fundie-fascists in power for another 8 years.

It's about time we stopped forming a circle to conduct a firing squad.

The Professionals Speak Out

Via Josh Marshall, eleven former intelligence officers (all much more senior than me, by the way) send a very respectful and straight forward letter to the congressional leadership of both parties.
We are not lawyers and are not qualified to determine whether the leakers
technically violated the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act. However,
we are confident that Valerie Plame was working in a cover status and that
our nation’s leaders, regardless of political party, have a duty to protect all
intelligence officers. We believe it is appropriate for the President to move
proactively to dismiss from office or administratively punish any official who
participated in any way in revealing Valerie Plame's status. Such an act by
the President would send an unambiguous message that leaks of this nature
will not be tolerated and would be consistent with his duties as the
Commander-in-Chief.

We also believe it is important that Congress speak with one non-partisan
voice on this issue. Intelligence officers should not be used as political
footballs. In the case of Valerie Plame, she still works for the CIA and is not
in a position to publicly defend her reputation and honor. We stand in her
stead and ask that Republicans and Democrats honor her service to her
country and stop the campaign of disparagement and innuendo aimed at
discrediting Mrs. Wilson and her husband.
I guess these guys just hate America or something.

Prepare for Battle

AMERICABlog has a good rundown on how several progessive groups view Shrub's SCOTUS nominee. Get the picture from Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Campaign, NARAL, and People for the American Way.

Bottom line: anti-Roe, anti-environment, and this clown only has 2 years of actual experience as a judge.

Send a Marine to Congress

He's a major in the Marine Corps Reserve, a veteran of the Iraq War, he's running for Congress in Ohio's 2nd District, and he's a Democrat.

Send Paul Hackett some cash. You know he needs it -- he's running against a Republican.

I did, and I'm feeling better already.

By the way, this is a special election. The voting is on Aug. 2, so do what you can today.

Thanks.

Pick a Winner

Kos has his second monthly Presidential Straw Poll available for your input. Get it here.

Last month Wes Clark got a strong plurality, but there were a lot of voters who really weren't sure which way to go.

By the way, one of the more intriguing pairings that showed up several times in the post-vote comments was a ticket of Wes Clark for President with Bill Clinton as his running mate. Made me smile (and perfectly legal as I read the Constitution).

Down and Sometimes Out

My apologies for the lack of posting the last 48 hours. I've been way sick and only semi-conscious much of the time. My esteemed physician gave me meds today and assured me that I'll feel much better and regain consciousness any day now.

Thanks for stopping by Julie, Wanda, Jess, Mike, Lisa Marie, the Fed guy in Alsaka, the person on the Tufts system who isn't allowed to leave any bookmarks so you have to Google Rain Storm every day, Ed, Mary, Billmon, Kim, and others I dare not mention because they choose to remain mysterious.

Keep comin' back.
